Synopsis: Fantasy adventure. During the American Civil War some soldiers escape from a prison during the siege of Richmond, Virginia, and get away in a hot air balloon during a storm. They are blown severely far from America and end up as castaways on a remote island. There they find some mysterious signs of life, such as a fire burning which none of them has lit, and some enormous creatures such as a giant crab and a fierce giant chicken. Two shipwrecked ladies come ashore in a drifting boat and with the men they form a small community as they plan their escape by building a boat. They are attacked by pirates though, and are saved by the enigmatic Captain Nemo, who has been living in his somewhat disabled submarine the Nautilus in a nearby underwater cave. With the island's volcano soon to erupt, they attempt to arrange an escape on the pirates' ship, which Nemo has sunk in a way that may allow for it to be refloated.
